Artist Biography 

박현호(MW)는  포스트식민 사회에서의 문화적 위장과 분열된 정체성의 복잡성을 탐구하며, 디지털 공간에서 형성되는 다중 페르소나와 상실된 토착성의 깊은 상처 사이의 유사성을 탐구한다.

한국에서 태어나 어린 시절을 호주의 워남불 시골 마을과 멜버른에서 보낸 그는 이러한 환경의 변화와 한국으로의 귀환을 통해 정체성의 양분과 이주를 경험하게 되었고, 이는 그의 작업의 개념적 토대가 되었다. 

소셜 미디어, 하위문화적 요소, 이미지 왜곡 등을 시각적으로 샘플링하여 현대 삶의 부조리하고 초현실적인 측면을 드러내며, 기술이 이러한 문화적 역학을 어떻게 감추고 동시에 증폭시키는지를 성찰한다.

Park Hyeun Ho (MW) explores the complexities of cultural camouflage and fragmented identity in a postcolonial society, drawing parallels between the multiple personas formed in digital spaces and the deep wounds of lost indigeneity. 

Born in Korea and raised in the rural town of Warrnambool and Melbourne, Australia, his experiences of displacement and return to Korea shaped his conceptual foundation, rooted in themes of bifurcated identity and migration. 

By visually sampling social media, subcultural elements, and image distortion, he exposes the absurd and surreal aspects of modern life, reflecting on how technology both conceals and amplifies these cultural dynamics.

Artist Statement

‘위장’이라는 개념은 작품에서 반복적으로 다루는 주제로, 제1차 세계대전 당시 프랑스 군대의 ‘camoufleurs’ 가 발전시킨 개념에서 영감을 받았다. 현대 사회에서는 우리가 다양한 환경에서 채택하는 페르소나를 통해 나타나며, 이는 정체성을 본능적으로 숨기는 행위를 반영한다. 이러한 페르소나 탐구는 물리적 공간과 디지털 공간 모두에 걸쳐 확장된다.

나의 작업은 생존을 위한 이중적 정체성의 구축을 탐구하는 질문과 도전의 틀 안에서 이루어진다. 유산과 경험을 관련 문화적 주제와 통합함으로써, 다양한 관객과 공감하는 대화를 촉진하고, 탈식민지 정체성과 문화적 위장에 관한 담론에 기여하고자 한다.

The idea of ‘camouflage’ remains a recurring theme, inspired by the concept developed by WWI French military ‘camoufleurs’. In modern society, it manifests through personas we adopt across different environments, mirroring the instinctual concealment of identity. This exploration of personas extends across both physical and digital spaces.

 My work operates within a framework of questions and challenges that explore the construction of a bifurcated identity as a means of survival. By integrating heritage and experiences with related cultural themes, I aim to foster dialogues that resonate with diverse audiences, contributing to discourses on post- colonial identity and cultural camouflage.
